Ba Gua Zhang: The Gentle Fist

The martial arts are still a relatively new concept for Americans. While the practice of Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and Kung Fu are becoming more widely practiced in the United States, other martial art styles fall by the wayside. I decided to take it upon myself to explore one such obscure style. The style of choice is Ba Gua Zhang. This style seemed particularly interesting to me because I discovered that I knew absolutely nothing about it, other than the fact that it is used in "Naruto" and "Avatar: The Last Airbender." What is Ba Gua Zhang really? Almost every martial art style is associated with an animal or element. What is Ba Gua Zhang associated with? Where did this style come from? What does it mean? Al of these questions spewed out onto a web browser, and answers were soon found.
Ba Gua Zhang is considered to be a new martial art, being that it was developed in the 19th century and most other martial arts are significantly older. It was founded by a man named Don Hai Quan, who is said to have learned it from Daoist and Buddhist masters. This was an astonishing piece of information to learn. This martial art, in its association with Taoism and Buddhism, is based on the concept of duality and harmony. The name Ba Gua Zhnag translates to mean Eight Trigram Palm which, for anyone who watches Naruto, is known to be the stlye of choice for the Hyuuga Clan, and is often referred to as the Gentle Fist Style. Gentle Fist was chosen as an alternate name due to the open palm contact that this stlye impliments. The stlye is based in China and was taught by Quan mostly in Beijing.
I was able to find out that Ba Gua Zhang is, in fact, associated with the air element, but not only the air element. As the name, Eight Trigram Palm, may suggest to some people, this style has eight "folds," or associations. The style is actually associated with Sky, Wind, Water, Mountain, Earth, Thunder, Fire, and Cloud. Although, that is only one interpretation. I have failed, as of yet, to find more than three "experts" who agree on the meaning of each trigram. Each element is considered to be one step on the eightfold path that is Ba Gua Zhang. As far as animals go, there are also eight associations for this style. They are Unicorn, Dragon, Hawk, Monkey, Lion, Phoenix, Snake, and Bear. Again, these may not be accurate.
I am still learning about the art, and I hope to find enough information to satisfy my thirst for Eastern knowledge. I desire to know so much more and to share it with my audience. When I learn enough about this martial art it will be posted, it will be printed, and it will be distributed.

  7. what surprised me the most was how late in the game this martial art style came out! I would have thought that it had been around for centuries. But it is only being taught now.

I still want to know as much as you do! I want to know more about the elements and find out what exact ones they are trying to convey with this art style.

What is most memorable is the elements that you spoke of now. I would have never expected sky, thunder or mountain as an element. Nor did I expect a unicorn, Phoenix or dragon to be mentioned as some of the animals!

I suggest that you should definitely read more into this type of art style, I know you were a little rushed today. It sounds very interesting and I hope I get to read your essay!

  8. What facts surprised you?
I didn't know that Ba Gua Zhang even existed, so I was surprised by the entire article. I thought it was very interesting learning about another type of martial arts.

What information is most memorable about this subject?
I like that this style includes multiple elements, moves, and animal symbols because it can expand over everyone's interests. Also, that it was apart of Avatar: The Last Airbender, so for those who've seen that movie/tv series, they can kind of know what Ba Gua Zhang involves.

What questions do you still have?
I would like to know more about the popularity of this martial art and where it is most often practiced (country maybe). Also, is it like Karate and involves different colored belts to show your skill level?

What suggestions do you have for the blog creator?
I thought it was a neat article, it just needs more information and maybe cover some moves that are associated with it.

  9. The fact that we as Americans only know 6 styles of martial arts, while there are so many.

Most memorable for me is that each trigram has its own element and animal.

How do you advance in rank in this style? How long does it take to really become a master of this style?

I think with a little more detail and specific stories of real life fighters that use this style well would make this great

  11. Jose: How come we don't know more about this style? It's really pretty cool. I think if you added some more about why we don't know a lot about it, it could be better. Otherwise, this is really good. I didn't know what Naruto was, but from the way you wrote it I could figure that part out. You explained things pretty well.

  17. Well I never really watched "Naruto" and I kind of know what "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is about so I thought it was cool that the martial arts in those shows is an actual art in real life! I never knew what it was called and it was interesting to read about. All the different animals associated with this art was also fun to learn because I never would've pictured them with martial arts. Good job Daniel!! :) -Chelsea
